The Truth About AC Refrigerant Leaks

Freon doesn't just "evaporate." If it's low, you have a problem.

We hear it all the time: "My AC is just a little low on Freon. Can you just top it off?"

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in HVAC repair. Unlike gas in a car, an air conditioner does not "use up" refrigerant as it runs. It circulates it in a continuous, sealed loop. If your system is low on refrigerant, there is only one reason: You have a leak.

The Problem with "Topping It Off"

Some less-scrupulous companies will happily charge you $300-$500 every summer to "top off" your system. This is bad for three reasons:

  1. It Wastes Money: The new refrigerant will just leak out again, often faster than before as the leak grows.
  2. It Damages the Environment: Refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases. Knowingly venting them into the atmosphere via a known leak is irresponsible.
  3. It Kills Your Compressor: Low refrigerant levels cause the compressor (the heart of your AC) to overheat. Constantly running it low and then refilling it puts massive stress on the component, leading to premature failure.

Finding and Fixing the Leak is the Only Solution

A reputable technician won't just add Freon and leave. They will use electronic leak detectors, UV dye, or nitrogen pressure tests to find exactly where the leak is.

Once found, you have a choice: repair the specific leak (which might involve brazing or replacing a coil) or, if the system is old and the coil is corroded, replace the unit. Both are better long-term financial decisions than the endless "top-off" cycle.
