Many homes in Littlerock were built in the 1940s and 50s. We often encounter heating systems that belong in a museum, not a home. While durable, these systems lack modern safety features.
Floor Furnaces
If you have a large metal grate in your floor that gets incredibly hot, you have a floor furnace. These are notorious for causing burns to children and pets. They also collect dust and trash, which is a major fire hazard when you turn them on for the first time in winter.
Wall Heaters
Old "gravity" wall heaters rely on convection (hot air rising) rather than a fan. They often have cracked heat exchangers (the metal box that separates the fire from your room air). A cracked exchanger releases odorless carbon monoxide into your bedroom.
Recommendation
If your heater is over 30 years old, it is time to retire it. Modern mini-splits or forced air systems are safer, cleaner, and use half the gas.
