Repair vs. Replace: The 50% Rule

Making the smart financial decision for your HVAC system.

One of the toughest questions we get from homeowners is: "Is it worth fixing this, or should I just get a new one?" It's a stressful situation. A new system is a big investment, but throwing good money after bad repairs on a dying unit is even worse.

To help you decide, we use a simple industry guideline called The 50% Rule.

What is the 50% Rule?

The rule is straightforward: If the cost of the repair is 50% or more of the value of a new system, you should replace it.

For example, if your 12-year-old compressor fails and the repair quote is $2,500, but a brand new, energy-efficient unit would cost $5,000, then you have hit the 50% threshold. It makes more sense to put that $2,500 toward a machine that will last another 15 years rather than one that might break again next month.

Other Factors to Consider

While the 50% Rule is a great starting point, you should also consider:

1. Age of the System

In the Antelope Valley, the average lifespan of an AC unit is 10-15 years.

2. Frequency of Breakdowns

Is this the first time you've called us in 5 years? Or are we on a first-name basis because we're there every summer? Frequent small repairs add up fast. If your system has become a "money pit," cut your losses.

3. Energy Efficiency (SEER Rating)

Older units often have a SEER rating of 10 or 12. New units are required to be at least SEER 14 or higher (and often much higher). Upgrading to a modern system could save you 20-40% on your monthly electric bill, which helps the new system pay for itself over time.
